our approach

We believe in the power of grassroots organizing to transform communities, and that community organizers, artists, and leaders are leading some of the most innovative and necessary solutions to Detroit’s problems. They are working on the ground, in neighborhoods, and know the problems and solutions best because they are the people most affected by them.

TPF works to ensure that that historically marginalized communities have the resources, relationships, and skills they need to collectively and equitably shape the future of Detroit. We believe in the importance of enriching the ecosystem of grassroots community organizing in Detroit with financial resources and strategic connections, and to supplement existing city-wide network-building efforts.

We provide resources through grants, trainings, and political education for organizing around systemic social justice issues. TPF fills a gap in the philanthropic community by prioritizing black, indigenous, and people-of-color led transformative systems change. We also believe in the importance of community governance, and TPF’s decision-making is led by grassroots community organizers as reflected in our Design Team, Community Table, and Giving Project.
